While the chancellor is referring to a bleak financial picture here, he might just as well be speaking to the bankruptcy of ethical principles at Boalt Hall, where professor John Yoo (who Birgeneau acknowledges is "a prime advocate of the US government's torture policy") is allowed to teach. Just what kind of message is the university delivering to young scholars?
